Dr. O. Joe Hines is a distinguished surgeon, educator, and researcher with over two decades of contributions to the field of surgery. He serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCLA and holds the prestigious William P. Longmire, Jr., Chair in Surgery. Dr. Hines is also the Executive Medical Director, overseeing clinical operations and surgical advancements at UCLA.
After earning his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Dr. Hines completed his general surgery training at UCLA. During his residency, he conducted two years of groundbreaking research in gastrointestinal physiology, which set the stage for his recruitment to the UCLA faculty in 1997.
Dr. Hines is recognized as a leader in the surgical community, having been honored with the UCLA Department of Surgery Golden Scalpel Award for teaching excellence, the UCLA School of Medicine Award for Excellence in Education, and the Sherman M. Mellinkoff Faculty Award from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. His research focuses on angiogenesis, cytokines, pancreatic carcinogenesis, and the role of diet in modulating these processes, consistently receiving funding from the NIH.
Dr. Hines has held leadership roles in numerous professional organizations, including serving as past-President of the Society of University Surgeons, Vice-President of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, President of the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and Chair of the American Board of Surgery. He was appointed to the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons and has served on the NIH Scientific Review Committee for Tumor Progression and Metastasis.
His contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards, including the American College of Surgeons Traveling Fellowship to Germany in 2005 and the James IV Traveling Fellowship in 2011. He currently serves on the editorial boards of leading surgical journals, including Surgery and Annals of Surgery, and is an editor of Maingot’s Abdominal Operations.
